رشد بافت داخلی رحم در مکانی بیرون از رحم از جمله تخمدان، روده کوچک، روده بزرگ، لگن و سایر نقاط بدن را آندومتریوز گویند. این بیماری همراه با درد و خونریزی شدید است.
آندومتریوز اغلب زنان را در دوره بارداری تحت تأثیر قرار می‌دهد. شیوع دقیق آن ناشناخته است و در بسیاری از بیماران بدون هیچ علائم و نشانه‌ای رخ می‌دهد. این بیماری یکی از دلایل درد لگن و علت انجام لاپاراسکوپی و هیسترکتومی است. علت ناباروری 20% تا 50% از زنان و درد در ناحیه لگن بیش از 80% از زنان، آندومتریوز تشخیص داده شده است.
این بیماری بیشتر در زنان 25 تا 35 سال شیوع دارد، در حالی که در زنان یائسه بسیار نادر است. تحقیقات نشان می‌دهد که این بیماری در زنان سفیدپوست نسبت به زنان آفریقایی و آسیایی بیشتر مشاهده می‌شود و شیوع آن در زنان قد بلندتر و با جثه ظریف (لاغر) کمتر است.
به تأخیر انداختن بارداری تا سنین بالا و عوامل ژنتیکی مانند وجود یک خویشاوند درجه اول مبتلا به بیماری، از عواملی هستند که شانس ابتلا به بیماری آندومتریوز را افزایش خواهد داد.
Endometriosis occurs when cells from the lining of your womb (uterus) grow in other areas of body such as: Ovaries, Bowel, Rectum, Bladder, Lining of Pelvic area and in other areas of the body. This can cause heavy pain and heavy bleeding.
Endometriosis affects women in their reproductive years. The exact prevalence of endometriosis is not known, since many women may have the condition and have no symptoms. It is one of the leading causes of pelvic pain and reasons for laparoscopic surgery and hysterectomy. Estimates suggest that between 20% – 50% of women being treated for infertility have endometriosis, and up to 80% of women with chronic pelvic pain may be affected.
While most cases of endometriosis are diagnosed in women aged around 25 to 35 years, Endometriosis is rare in postmenopausal women. Endometriosis is more commonly found in white women as compared with African American and Asian women. Studies further suggest that endometriosis is most common in taller, thin women with a low body mass index (BMI). Delaying pregnancy until an older age is also believed to increase the risk of developing endometriosis. It also is likely that there are genetic factors that predispose a woman to developing endometriosis, since having a first-degree relative with the condition increases the chance that a woman will develop the condition.
